Parasol Bases

Our parasol bases are cleverly crafted to give your parasol extra support and weight throughout the year! Parasol bases are typically made of heavy materials, such as cast iron or concrete, and are designed to prevent the parasol from tipping over in windy conditions.

Our selection of parasol bases varies in weight and size with our heaviest weighing in at 90kg! The weight of the base is very important as it helps to keep the parasol stable, especially during any harsh weather conditions. Some of our bases come with wheels or handles to make them easier to move around, while others are designed to be permanently fixed in place!

Our parasol bases come in a range of shapes and designs to suit different styles of parasols and outdoor spaces. Some popular shapes include round, square, and rectangular, while some designs feature decorative patterns or textures to add a stylish touch to your outdoor area. What is more, some of our parasol bases can be filled with sand, water, or concrete to increase their weight and stability!

At the Garden Furniture Centre, we believe that parasol bases are an essential accessory for anyone looking to use a parasol in their outdoor space to provide stability and support to ensure your parasol stays upright and secure!

Parasol Base FAQs

Do I need a base for my parasol & how do I choose the right size base for my parasol?

Yes you do need a base so that your parasol is stable, the weight and size of the base should match the size of your parasol canopy and pole. Larger canopies and cantilever parasols require heavier bases. Always check the parasol manufacturer’s recommendations. If you’re not sure please give the office a call on 01564 793 652.

Are parasol bases universal?

Most bases are adjustable to fit common pole diameters of 38mm, 48mm and 58mm but always check measurements to ensure compatibility with your parasol. Please note this does not apply to cantilever parasol bases.

Can parasol bases be left outside all year?

Yes all of our parasol bases are designed to be left outside year round.

How heavy should a base be for a regular parasol?

We recommend the following minimum base weights for safe and secure use:
Parasol used in a table (center pole): A base of at least 20kg is required for added stability.
Free-standing center pole parasol (not used in a table): A base of at least 37kg is recommended.

Cantilever parasol: A base of at least 90kg is essential to provide sufficient support and prevent tipping.
Please note: Even when using the recommended base weights, we strongly advise closing and securing your parasol during windy conditions or when not in use. This will help prevent damage and ensure safety.

What materials are parasol bases made from?

Common materials include concrete, granite, resin-filled (with water or sand), and metal. Resin-filled bases are lighter to move but need filling for stability.

Can I use my parasol base without filling it?

No. If it’s a fillable base, it must be filled with sand or water to provide proper stability. Please note that is the base is filled with water it will evaporate slowly over time and will need to be topped up regularly.

Why do cantilever parasols need heavier bases & what kind of base is best for a cantilever parasol?

Because the weight of the canopy is offset to the side, they require a much heavier base (often 90kg+) or multiple base slabs to remain stable.

Can I use a regular parasol base for a cantilever parasol?

No. Cantilever parasols need specially designed bases to balance the offset weight.

Can I move a parasol base easily?

Some heavier bases have wheels for easier movement on flat surfaces. Heavier bases may need two people to move safely.

Do I need to close my parasol when it’s windy?

Yes. Even with a heavy base, parasols should always be closed during strong winds to prevent damage especially of the parasol spokes.
