The History of Thai Teak: From Ancient Forests to FSC® Certified Garden Furniture

For centuries, teak has been regarded as one of the finest hardwoods in the world. Famous for its beautiful golden colour, natural oils and exceptional durability, teak has been used for everything from traditional buildings and sailing ships to luxury garden furniture.

At The Garden Furniture Centre, we appreciate the rich history and timeless beauty of teak. As an FSC® Certified retailer (FSC-C147147), we also recognise the importance of responsible timber sourcing.

The Fascinating History of Thai Teak

Teak (Tectona grandis) grows naturally in parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

Northern Thailand, particularly the regions around Chiang Mai, Lampang and Phrae, was once famous for its magnificent teak forests.

During the 19th century, teak became one of Thailand's most valuable exports. European timber merchants recognised its remarkable strength and resistance to water, making it highly desirable for shipbuilding, construction and furniture.

One of the most fascinating parts of this history is the role of elephants. Before modern machinery, elephants were used to transport enormous teak logs through Thailand's dense forests, working alongside skilled handlers known as mahouts.

However, increasing demand led to widespread forest loss. In 1989, Thailand banned commercial logging in natural forests, marking an important turning point in the country's approach to forest conservation.

Today, responsibly managed plantations and recognised forestry certification help support a more sustainable future for this remarkable timber.

Why Is Teak Perfect for Garden Furniture?

Teak's enduring popularity comes from its exceptional natural properties.

  • Naturally weather resistant: Teak heartwood contains natural oils and compounds that help resist moisture and decay, making it ideal for the British climate.

  • Beautiful appearance: Its rich golden-brown tones and distinctive grain bring natural elegance to any garden.

  • Aging gracefully: Untreated teak gradually develops an attractive silver-grey patina without necessarily losing its underlying strength.

  • Built to last: Quality teak garden furniture can last for decades with appropriate care and maintenance.

  • Traditional craftsmanship: Strong mortice and tenon joints and teak dowels are used in selected designs to create durable, beautifully finished furniture.

Whether it's a traditional garden bench or a contemporary dining table, teak combines practicality with timeless style.
