London Olympics 2012 - Highlights of the Games

So the games have finally come to an end with 17 days of drama, excitement, disappointment and total elation in equal measures for many countries. I couldn't let the astonishing achievements pass without mentioning my personal highlights of the games.

But first - here's the actual medal haul for Team GB... Amazing.

Team GB Olympic Medals 2012

Outstanding Athletes Worthy of Praise - Gold Medals

Here is my personal all time list of Gold successes who performed 'over and above' at the London Games.

Men's Individual Time Trial - Bradley Wiggins - A supreme athlete who managed to deliver gold in the Men's Road Cycling Time trial just 1 week after riding 3500KM to unprecedented success in the Tour de France.

Men's Keirin Finals 1-6 ‎- Chris Hoy - An all time great athlete with a record haul of 6 golds in his career. He commands ultimate respect and a really nice guy to boot.

Men's 5000m - Mo Farah - The 5KM gold on top of the 10KM was just the icing on the cake for this likable guy who wasn't satisfied with coming second. Lifted the rough off the arena.

Men's Marathon ‎ - Stephen Kiprotich - Gets the first gold medal in over 40 years for Uganda. He left his home and family to live in another country, Kenya, to train with the best - then he beat them.

Sailing Men's Finn - Ben Ainsley - 4 Golds and 1 Silver is a record few ever achieve. The fact that he was performing badly up to the 4th race - then he got angry and started to win. Never say die attitude and a real winner.

Of course there were lots of others but you've probably noticed one glaring omission. Yes, he's left out because the show boat just sank when he announced "I am a living legend". Athletes usually thank their coaches, family and friends for supporting them in their quest. I'm keeping my eye on Yohan Blake.

All 564 athletes of Team GB should be applauded for their dedication - except perhaps Phillips Idowu.

Closing of the Games London 2012

The opening and closing ceremonies contained moments of real drama, eccentricity, fun and conveyed many great elements of what it is to be British.

Now - the Paralympics 2012 await.
